Title: Learning Together for Better Cancer Care: Module Development on Interprofessional Education

Abstract : Basics of Inquiry

The World Health Organization recognizes interprofessional collaboration in education and practice as a key strategy to address the global health workforce crisis. This approach emphasizes developing essential skills in teamwork, team-based care, and effective communication, ultimately enhancing the quality of patient care.

Purpose & Objectives

This study evaluated the impact of a standardized Interprofessional Education module designed for cancer care.

Methods

A core committee comprising a Hematologist, a Radiation Oncologist, a Surgeon, a Nurse Educator, and a Physical Therapist collaboratively developed the module. They identified core competencies, designed teaching and learning activities, and reviewed the curricula of involved professions to finalize content. The defined competencies included Values and Ethics for Interprofessional Practice, Roles and Responsibilities, Interprofessional Communication, and Teamwork. Teaching methods incorporated interactive lectures, case-based scenarios, group discussions, role plays, clinical observation, and shadowing experiences. Medical education experts validated the module, which was implemented in a 10-hour workshop with 15 interns five each from Medicine, Nursing, and Physiotherapy.

Findings or Outcomes

Structured feedback was collected using a questionnaire, and participant reflections were analyzed. Over 93% agreed that the module’s activities effectively promoted active learning, and most participants recommended integrating it into their regular curriculum. More than 80% said they would recommend the module to their peers. High satisfaction was reported regarding the module’s organization, presentation, and the knowledge gained, with the shadowing activity being particularly well-received.

Reflections revealed key themes like core values, teamwork, communication, mutual respect, and collaboration. Participants gained new insights into the roles and responsibilities of different healthcare professions and the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation, helping them better understand their own professional roles.

Collaborative curriculum building was key to the module’s success. The positive feedback underscores its impact on teamwork, communication, and role clarity, emphasizing the need to expand this approach to other specialties.
