Courtney Trace is an experienced Nurse Manager with over 16 years of nursing experience, including 10 years in leadership roles within a pediatric hematology oncology department. She began her career as a clinical nurse in 2009, providing direct care to pediatric hematology oncology patients before transitioning to a Nurse Educator role for 6 years, where she focused on enhancing the skills and knowledge of fellow nurses on a blended hem-onc unit. In her current leadership position, she continues to foster the development of the team while advocating for improved patient care practices.
Courtney's professional interests include central line infection reduction techniques, sickle cell advocacy, and empowering the next generation of nurses through education and mentorship. Courtney has been a key figure in advancing safety practices related to hazardous drug handling, publishing work on closed system transfer devices in relation to USP-800 and consistently promoting safe working conditions in healthcare environments.
A dedicated leader, Courtney has led initiatives to improve team onboarding and retention, established best practices for chemotherapy check-off at her institution as well as standardized non-oncology neuro MRI and lumbar punctures through the imaging and OR departments. She
has partnered with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care including reduction of patient falls and central line infection rates as well as decreased readmission rates. As Vice President of her local APHON chapter, she actively contributes to the professional development of pediatric hematology oncology nurses and spearheads multiple committees aimed at advancing organizational goals inclusive of patient throughput and retention. Courtney also was speaker at a Solutions for Patient Safety event sharing her knowledge on the importance of communication.
